“When water cries – S3 nsuo su a” is a collaboration between Fibi Afloe (Ghana) and Amelie Koerbs (Germany) examining communities along the Black and White Volta River in the Gonja Kindom in Ghana. The project reveals an interplay between humans and nature which in the end leads both photographers to the question: Who should be held responsible when humans and nature struggle?

The Gonja Kingdom is in the Northern part of Ghana with its natural boarders of the Black and White Volta. For the past years humans decided to benefit from these water bodies by constructing dams which produce electricity and water supply for irrigation. The Akosombo dam - Volta Lake, the Bagré dam - White Volta and Bui dam - Black Volta are affecting the area of the Gonja Kingdom. These dams form a massive interference with nature and threaten the livelihoods of many people living along the Black and White Volta River.

“When water cries – S3 nsuo su a” is not only a story about water being hurt. It is about our relationship with water. Through this project we look into the landscape to see if we are treating water fairly, not respecting water. The photographs beg to ask if water is all about us; are we losing our best chance to preserve our very own? 

Water is our mirror; it reflects whatever it is shown. What would happen if we would start listening to water and open our eyes to reflect on the polluted impact our behaviour has towards water and the land that holds it. If we were to listen to water, we will become aware that it can no longer bear all these pains - our chances of survival are shrinking. If we start listening to water, we will hear it cry for us because it knows what is coming.

The project includes multiple interviews with individuals of communities along the Black and White Volta River.
