Amelie is a photographer based in between Germany, Ghana, and Finland. She works with analogue black and white film as well as digital moving image and text. Her curiosity leads her to stories of people, especially women, their interpersonal relationships, and their connection to landscape and nature. Her photographic practice takes time and is based on collaboration and care: she listens closely to the environments and individuals she works with.
During the image-making process, she allows things to emerge and flow naturally, rather than resisting them.
Amelie’s work is shaped by the places she has lived and learned in. She grew up in a small village in Northern Germany, where two-thirds of the landscape is sky, and the people are honest and down-to-earth. These qualities influence her work wherever she finds herself.
After studying documentary photography at Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie in Berlin, she learned from Ghanaian photographers such as Nii Obodai to “look for the magic” and from Fibi Afloe to trust her intuition and be sensitive to the clues around her. Her master’s studies at Aalto University in Finland prompt her to zoom out and see herself within a broader theoretical context, making her sensitive to different knowledge systems and her own privilege to access these.
With her work, Amelie wishes to create portals to other worlds and spaces for imagination, guided by curiosity. Her practice is personal, with stories profound yet dealing with universal human concerns. Amelie’s work has been exhibited in Berlin, Tamale, Schleswig-Holstein, and Helsinki.
In addition to her photographic work, she has curated “A walk with the light” (2024, Wohlde) and assisted exhibition-making and curating at Nuku Studio – Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale (2022-2025) and Robin Beth Inc. in Ghana (2024-2025).
